Ion permeation through 5-hydroxytryptamine-gated channels in neuroblastoma N18 cells
Ionic currents induced by 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in cultured neuroblastoma N18 cells were studied using whole-cell voltage clamp. The response was blocked by 1-10 nM 5-HT3 receptor-specific antagonists MDL 7222 or ICS 205-930, but not by 1 microM 5-HT1/5-HT2 receptor antagonist spiperone or 5-HT2 receptor-specific antagonist ketanserin. These 5-HT3 receptors seem to be ligand-gated channels...
متن کاملMolecular basis of permeation in voltage-gated ion channels.
J on channels are pore-forming macromolecules that provide a passive conduit for ion transfer across membranes. Although simple ionophores such as gramicidin and nystatin' fall within this legalistic definition, the ion channels of eukaryotic cells are integral membrane proteins, many of which have now been isolated biochemically, reconstituted, cloned, and expressed. These fascinating proteins...
متن کاملMechanism of Ion Permeation in Mammalian Voltage-Gated Sodium Channels
Recent determination of the crystal structures of bacterial voltage-gated sodium (NaV) channels have raised hopes that modeling of the mammalian counterparts could soon be achieved. However, there are substantial differences between the pore domains of the bacterial and mammalian NaV channels, which necessitates careful validation of mammalian homology models constructed from the bacterial NaV ...
متن کاملCa2F permeation in cyclic nucleotide-gated channels
Cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) channels conduct NaF, KF and Ca2F currents under the control of cGMP and cAMP. Activation of CNG channels leads to depolarization of the membrane voltage and to a concomitant increase of the cytosolic Ca2F concentration. Several polypeptides were identified that constitute principal and modulatory subunits of CNG channels in both neurons and non-excitable cells, co...

Cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) channels conduct Na+, K+ and Ca2+ currents under the control of cGMP and cAMP.
